Ideas for Christmas Tree Decorations

Decorating the Christmas tree is a favorite tradition for many families. For people who love Christmas, each year provides the opportunity to pull out their old Christmas tree decorations and also shop for some new ones. The best Christmas tree decorations will reflect a family’s personal style while also portraying the beauty of this magical time of the year. When decorating a Christmas tree, the possibilities are endless. Therefore, for the best results, a few simple guidelines should be followed when selecting and placing Christmas tree decorations on the tree.

Some people prefer an eclectic look to their Christmas tree, with a smattering of different colors and images. However, other people prefer a more pulled together look. Either way, choosing decorations within a particular color scheme or theme can make the decorating process easier. The traditional colors of red and green can be used, or some people prefer a monochromatic color scheme. Christmas tree decorations in different shades of blue and white can create a spectacular winter scene.

Once the theme and color scheme have been decided upon, the first decoration to place should be the lights. Lights should be selected with the color scheme in mind, as they will help to draw attention to the other tree decorations. The lights should be carefully wrapped around the tree from the bottom to the top. There should also be enough lights to fully cover the tree. Typically, one hundred lights should be used for each foot of the tree’s height.

Once the lights have been placed on the tree, then it is time for the garland. Garland can be tinsel, beads or ribbon. Some people enjoy making a garland from natural materials, such as pinecones or popcorn. To avoid having the garland look too tight on the tree, it should be hung loosely from branches all around the tree. Another alternative to garland is to drape ribbons down from the top of the tree coming from a large bow that has been tied at the top.

Ornaments are placed after the garland has been added to the tree, and this is the area of decorating where many people get creative. If a theme has been chosen for the tree, then ornaments should reflect this through their shapes and colors. For example, a candy land theme might call for ornaments that are in the shape of gingerbread men and hard candy pieces. A winter wonderland theme would look great with snowflake and snowman Christmas tree ornaments.

In order to draw attention to the ornaments, the placement of them is also important. Favorite ornaments should be placed first and in prominent areas of the tree. Next, any larger ornaments should be placed on the tree while keeping them evenly placed apart. Special Christmas tree decorations might need to have a safe place on the tree where younger children cannot reach them. Finally, hang any accent ornaments on the tree in order to complete the overall look.

The last of the Christmas tree decorations is also usually the most important. A Christmas tree topper is the highlight of most Christmas decorations. Some families use a traditional angel or star, while other families prefer to make their own or use special lights. No matter how the tree is topped, what matters the most is that the finished tree reflects a person’s traditions and sense of style, while drawing the eye to the magical beauty of the season.
