For many of us the Christmas season brings out the crafty little elf within. Holiday songs on the radio, warm drinks, strings of lights, and freshly fallen snow have a way of inspiring us to get busy and adorn our homes with our very own hand-made decorations. Unfortunately we can’t all be Martha Stewart, who produces seemingly effortless yet elegant holiday decor; some of us try (and fail) to create festive ornaments that end up looking more like Halloween projects gone wrong! If you find yourself to be “creatively challenged” yet still have the urge to make your own Christmas Tree Decorations, fear not, these are some easy yet classic crafts that just about anybody can make.
Of all the home-made Christmas Tree Decorations out there, one of the most attractive yet easiest to make yourself is popcorn garland. You’ll need waxed dental floss, a sewing needle, scissors, and popped corn (without butter or salt, air popped at home is best). All you need to do is string the corn on the floss and tie off the ends – it really doesn’t get any easier than that. For extra pizazz, you can add dried cranberries in intervals, or even red or green buttons. The garland can be made as long as you like, and it doesn’t need to be restricted to the tree: bookshelves, mantles, and doorways are all perfect places to string your home-made garland.
Another easy thing to do yourself is to fill your own bulbs. Clear glass ornaments can be purchased at a relatively affordable price, and it’s up to you to make them your own! Simpler than building a ship in a bottle but with a similar multidimensional feel, this Christmas craft is something anyone can do. Just gently open the top of the bulb and place whatever you find festive or cheery inside (so long as it fits of course!). Some ideas: a peacock feather, beads, faux evergreens and holly berries, or ribbons. The more skilled you become, the more options there are. When you’re done, be sure that the top is on securely – some hot glue will do the trick.
In addition to Christmas Tree Decorations, you can also decorate your own holiday wreath. Basic wreaths can be purchased at any craft supply store, and from there it’s your job to jazz it up with whatever strikes your fancy. Old ornaments can be repurposed, as well as ribbons and pine cones. Whatever you’re making for the holiday season, just remember that it doesn’t need to be complicated to get compliments!
